Belleville Police say a crash on Sidney Street Wednesday morning began with a call regarding an intimate partner dispute.
Officers responded to the call at a west end residence around 8:45 a.m. and learned the male at the residence was on conditions not to communicate with a female who resides there.
The male had departed before police arrived but was located in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.
Police attempted a stop on Cascade Blvd but the driver fled.
Police engaged in a very short pursuit before terminating it due to public safety and the vehicle was last seen on Parkdale Drive.
Shortly after, the vehicle was observed near the intersection of Lemoine Street and Maple Drive where police say it intentionally drove into a parked fully marked cruiser with an officer sitting inside.
The vehicle then headed north on Sidney Street, collided with a vehicle crossing Sidney Street towards Tracey Street and then struck a traffic light pole.
Police were not pursuing the suspect at that time.
The suspect received minor injuries while the occupants of the other vehicle were not hurt.
A 41-year-old male from Whitby was arrested and is charged with eight counts of driving while prohibited, dangerous driving, flight from police, three counts of breaching a court order, impaired operation of a motor vehicle by drug and numerous infractions under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police say the suspect is currently on eight separate Canada Wide driving prohibition orders.
The accused has been held for bail.
The investigation is continuing as police continue to speak with numerous witnesses.
