Prince Edward County Council is urging the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to engage with local residents in regards to plans for the newly created Monarch Point Conservation Area.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, councillors approved a resolution to send a letter to David Piccini, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, requesting that the province engage in consultations with local residents, develop a management plan for the area, and establish an advisory committee of local stakeholders in the area.
Councillor John Hirsch said that a wide range of recreational activities would have to be considered in the management plan.
“It’s a balancing act to balance the ecological needs of the reserves, which is what the province is trying to protect, versus the human uses of the reserve,” said Councillor Hirsch
Monarch Point Conservation area was officially created in June, and consists of nearly 4000 acres of provincial land along the south shore of Prince Edward County. The area has rich biodiversity and is part of key migratory paths for wildlife.
