The Municipality of Tweed has approved the creation of a zoning by-law amendment that would allow the construction of a new 24-unit, three-storey apartment building.
The new building would be built on vacant land at 53 Bridgewater Road, the same land where a previous apartment building burned down in 2020.
“We rushed this because the person that is building the complex needed to get a building permit issued because they’ve made it through county planning, to our planning, and everything that it needs to get a building permit issued, so they could break ground and start pouring the foundation by the end of the month,” Mayor Don DeGenova explained to Quinte News.
The apartment building is being built by the same owner as the previous building, who is looking to rebuild.
DeGenova says there was no opposition to the new building. In fact, during a planning committee meeting, members of the public showed up to voice their support of the project.
“Each unit is going to come with its own garden plot so that people can grow their own vegetables,” DeGenova said. “It is also a rather large property so the owner is turning it into an environmentally sensitive area with native plants and pathways. So it’s a neat concept, and it’s going to be wonderful for the individuals that live there.”
The amendment will be brought to Tweed’s September 12 meeting for approval.
