A tractor trailer caught fire just before 6 p.m. on Friday between Belleville and Trenton on the 401.
The westbound lanes of the highway were briefly closed as Quinte West Fire Department and OPP responded to battle the blaze.
A volunteer firefighter had been travelling just behind the truck when it caught fire, and stopped to help the driver detach the burning trailer from the truck and move it a safe distance away.
The trailer, loaded with paper, was determined to have caught fire after its brakes overheated.
Nobody was injured, and the highway was reopened after a half hour.
