Belleville police held their annual Cops and Kids Fishing Derby on a cloudy Saturday morning at Victoria Park.
Children and their parents from around Belleville came out despite threats of heavy rain to enjoy a morning of fishing, with police from Belleville police joined by officers from CFB Trenton military police and conservation officers to oversee the event and forge friendships with local youth.
While the kids were fishing and enjoying the morning’s festivities, officers encouraged their efforts and recorded all the day’s catches.
Belleville Police Sergeant Patrick Comeau said that the cloudy day was ideal for fishing.
“Turnout was absolutely fantastic. We’re very, we’re very happy with the amount of kids and other agencies here that are supporting it. We’re hoping that we’re going to reach 250 kids, that’s our goal,” said Comeau.
Several prizes were up for grabs for kids who caught the best fish, including tackle boxes and fishing rods.
The event ran from 9 a.m. till noon, when a free lunch was served for all the attending kids.
