This spring, on one day during the month of May, 13 birders on 13 properties in Northumberland County, counted birds.
Doug McCrae, of the Northumberland Land Trust Board of Directors, tells Quinte News the idea of the Bird Count is to spot as any species as possible.
McCrae points to the two Nelson Sparrows, once called the Sharp Tailed Sparrow, which arrived this spring.
“The Nelson sparrow is a bird that in our case it breeds on the coast of James and Hudson Bay to the north of us and then migrates through our region. But it’s almost never seen in migration and when you do it’s in the fall. This is only maybe the second or third spring record ever for Northumberland County of the Nelson sparrow.”
