The ability to play baseball might be something many take for granted but for youngsters and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities it’s a challenge.
However, the Field of Ability, located at Parkdale Memorial Park on Sidney Street in Belleville has levelled the playing field.
Now in its second full season since its near million dollar construction, the Field of Ability is home to the Challenger Baseball Program which for years operated one night a week on the dirt diamond at Loyalist College. However, that often made it hard to maneuver for those in wheelchairs or using walkers.
Challenger Baseball co-ordinator Lisa Chesher says since moving to the fully rubberized surface, the program has exploded.
Chesher says next year they will expand to four nights a week to accommodate everyone.
And it’s not just youngsters anymore as players ranging in age from 4-50+ are playing as well.
An adaptive soccer program is now using the field on Saturday mornings as well.
On Tuesday night Challenger Baseball received a $5000 donation from the Children’s Foundation to support young players in the program.
