Prince Edward County Council is looking into how to fund needed repairs for County Road 49.
In a motion put forward by Councillor Chris Braney at Tuesday’s council meeting, it was proposed to declare the reconstruction of County Road 49 a project of community interest, and establish a Community Benefit Fund to work towards funding the project.
Councillor Braney said that County Road 49 needs to be addressed and that establishing the benefit fund was a first step towards that.
“County Road 49 is year after year one of the worst roads in the province, and that’s consistent again this year,” said Councillor Braney. “It’s not a safe road and we have to do something about it.”
The cost to complete the needed repairs is expected to be $30 million.
The community benefit fund can be payed into by local residents as a tax deductible donation. The fund is expected to help cover one third of the total costs, while the municipality seeks provincial and federal funding to cover the remaining 66% of the cost.
The motion passed unanimously, without debate.
