An expansion of a long term care facility accounts for a large chunk of the dollar value of last month’s building activity in Belleville.
In May, the city issued 84 building permits with a construction value of just over $36 million.
One of those permits is for work that has begun on the $22.5 million expansion of Westgate Lodge on Wilkie Street.
The long term care home will grow from 88 beds to 160.
Overall last month’s building activity is down significantly from May 2022 when 130 permits worth $50.1 million were issued.
Seventeen of the permits issued last month were for new residential units.
Year-to-date construction is valued at $78.8 million, down almost $27 million from the first five months of 2022.
