Marilyn (Lyn) May, October 17, 1945 to May 22, 2023
Marilyn Holt, yes, really – no middle name, was born in Worthing, England, to James and Ceridwen Holt
and lived there for a whole 10-months before coming to Canada. While short on time, it was long on
stress, as being born in England caused her a lot of extra paperwork when dealing with the Canadian
government, her favourite institution *insert sarcasm here.
She took on traits from both her parents. Her father’s money sense and generous spirit and her
mother’s sense of style and quick retorts. Her family and friends did wish some of those retorts took a
little longer to deliver, with a little less edge, but you always knew where you stood with Lyn. She was
authentic to her core.
Once in Canada, Lyn was joined by brothers Allan and Butch, each with their own unique spirit and
personality. The family lived in Oshawa most of their childhood and to the day she passed she could tell
you every home and every person who lived in her neighbourhood. Lyn’s mind was razor sharp and you
would never win an argument or discussion with her, if she thought she was right. Which was always.
Some of her happiest childhood memories came from trips to New Brunswick to visit the East Coast
cousins. Lyn cherished those memories and loved every moment of her time there. She attended the
Holt family reunion just this past July and she was so happy to see her family again after seven years.
Those reunions will never quite be the same.
Lyn was married twice. Both to men named Bob. It was easier that way.
Her first marriage welcomed two children, the dynamic duo of Cory and Susan. Born only 11 months
apart, they were united in pushing the boundaries and keeping Lyn on her toes. Both her children shared
her passionate spirit and big personality and she was extremely proud of both of them. The biggest
heartbreak of her life was when Cory passed away at the age of 24. She lost a piece of her heart that
day.
Her second marriage brought the red-headed Robert into their lives. To say he is fiery is an
understatement, but he met his match when he met Lyn. Their fights could blow the roof off at times,
but their love was much stronger and outmatched any fight. When she married Bob, she became a
stepmom, step grandmother and great-grandmother. Lyn loved and appreciated all the visits,
celebrations and assistance Bob’s sons Rob and Russ brought to her life.
Lyn had many friends. Too many to mention for fear of leaving anyone out. They appreciated her
straight-forward approach, willingness to help and big-hearted nature. She could always be counted on
if they ever needed help and her door was always open to anyone who needed a home or a seat around
the table.
Lyn was a generous, thoughtful and good person. She led her life exactly as she wanted. To paraphrase
Frank Sinatra – she had it Her Way!
A celebration in her honour will be held in the place she loved the most, her home on the Trent River,
145 Hood Lane in Frankford, on Saturday, May 27. Family and friends are welcome to come and share
memories of Lyn any time after 3 p.m.
In her memory, go to your local Tim Hortons and buy an ice cap for someone. Going for a drive and
getting an ice cap, made with chocolate milk of course, was a daily ritual for Mom and Bob and if you’re
ever wanting to go to Tim’s, give Bob a call. He’ll be happy to have someone join in him on his daily
drives.
Bob and Susan will miss her greatly, but the missing piece of her heart will fall back in to place when
she’s reunited with Cory.
We love you.
