The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating what caused an early morning fire at Colborne’s only grocery store that will see it closed for the foreseeable future.
Firefighters from several departments were called to Foodland on Toronto Street just before 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Flames inside the store were doused quickly, however, firefighters were on scene for several hours dousing hot spots in walls and other spaces.
No one was injured but damage is estimated to be well in excess of one million dollars.
A used vehicle dealer, auto repair shop, and a bicycle shop near the store suffered some smoke and water damage.
Cramahe Fire Chief Mark MacDonald tells Quinte News Sobey’s officials were also coming to the scene to assess the damage to see what they can do to help.
In a Facebook post on the Colborne Foodland page Wednesday afternoon, the owners thanked firefighters and the community for their support and asked for some time as they figure out the next step in helping to get food to the community.
Some local residents have already set up their own Facebook page, Colborne Grocery Services in response to the fire and store closure, offering grocery pick-up service for people who need it.
