A pair of food trucks are coming to Loyalist Parkway in Quinte West, even though this isn’t normally allowed.
A special exemption to the business licensing by-law has been granted by Quinte West Council to a pair of food trucks that are looking to operate on the same property.
Both Steak Machine and El Torito submitted applications to operate their food trucks on 22233 Loyalist Parkway near Carrying Place. The two businesses and the property owner were unaware that food trucks have to be a certain distance away from other businesses selling food, which would prevent them from being on the same property.
Because Steak Machine submitted first, El Toritio would be barred from operating in the area without an exemption.
A similar exemption had been offered to another food truck, Jerkabego, in Carrying Place in 2017.
Councillor Zach Card spoke in support of granting the exemption to the by-law.
“They’re not really violating the spirit of it, which was to protect existing restaurants and businesses and not have mobile ones opening on their doorstep that would negatively affect them financially,” said Councillor Card.
The exemption was approved after a brief debate.
