property standard by-laws, among many others, the matters will be dealt with by a local
Screening Officer instead of a Justice of the Peace.
“I think the intent here is to recognize that the court system is meant for serious Highway Traffic Act issues, serious criminal issues, and maybe our by-laws should be dealt with more locally rather than going through a court system.”
Animal Control By-law changed
Brighton council has approved an exception from its animal control by-law that the local farming community will be happy with.
Any dog used to guard sheep, cattle, chickens, or other livestock will now be exempt from such current regulations as fees for licensing and kennel licensing, the mandatory wearing of collars and noise complaints because of barking.
Guard dogs will aggressively bark as their first warning to predators such as coyotes and foxes.
Collars impede a working dog’s ability to run through thick underbrush in its effort to scare predators away and many farmers with herds of cattle, chicken coops, or flocks of sheep need two, three, or more guard dogs to provide an effective defence as coyotes will often lure a dog near them only to have others attack from another angle afterward.
Herding dogs such as Border Collies will also be included in the exemptions to the animal control by-law.
