“Prior to the incident I’m about to tell you about, I never knew that mobile soccer nets presented a risk. And I’m willing to bet, that like me, many parents have seen their kids play on or near soccer nets without ever stopping to think that they could tip over.”
“Garrett’s father knows he can’t get Garrett back but he also doesn’t want his son’s death to have been in vain. So please, let’s carry this bill today and move forward to committing a third reading so that no other parent has to bury a child because of an incident like this.”
“I can’t say thank you enough to Ric and his people for, not only did they sponsor the bill again but they’ve retweaked it and worked it so it made it more, for lack of a better term, palatable and feasible.”
Mills says ultimately, this is about protecting children.
“After we lost Garrett, I guess my thought was, God forbid something like that should ever happen again. It shouldn’t have had to have happened in the first place. And our initiative was just the idea of keeping this from ever having to happen again.”
Mills says he’s been told the third reading should happen in September and that he and his family will be at Queen’s Park when the bill is given Royal Assent.
