A new housing plan is being adopted in Prince Edward County.
During their Tuesday council session, Prince Edward County Council received a report from staff detailing a new housing plan designed to address housing shortfalls and homelessness in the community.
The plan presented by municipal staff illustrates the current housing shortfall in the community. The plan notes that there is a four to six year wait period for subsidized housing, and that while there is a need for 1000 units of subsidized housing in the community, only 244 units exist currently.
The plan also identifies a need for emergency shelter beds for people facing homelessness, and supports to help prevent renters losing their homes as rental costs rise.
The housing plan is designed to be active for five years, from 2023 to 2028, and includes action to increase the available affordable and subsidized housing available in the municipality.
The plan also includes goals for exactly how many new units of housing need to be added to meet the housing goals, calling for an overall 39% increase in available housing over the five years, with more specific goals for different kinds of housing.
Council voted to approve and adopt the new plan.
