The Bayside Secondary School community and its supporters have been heard loud and clear.
The school’s half a century old team and mascot name, the Red Devils, will continue as its brand.
Starting last year, staff with the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board questioned whether Red Devils was an appropriate brand because of concerns it might be seen as derogatory toward Indigenous communities and wider.
An online public survey was launched recently on a possible change and school Superintendent Ken Dostaler tells Quinte News there was no doubt about what people who cared about the issue wanted.
“I’m an alumni from Bayside, I taught there for several years and I know lots of the kids and teachers and I respect that a VERY high number responded and it was all in concert with keeping the status quo.”
As of late last week a student-led petition had collected close to 3,000 signatures against changing the Red Devils brand for Bayside Secondary.
