Belleville council is supporting a resolution against a plan by Enbridge Gas to start charging municipalities $200 for each utility locate the company is asked to do for the municipality.
Councillor Paul Carr said Enbridge’s idea would be costly to the municipality and is unfair because the company had been doing locates on municipally-owned rights of way for roadwork absolutely free of charge for years.
Councillor Chris Malette agreed.
“If tomorrow we decided to charge them for installing their gas lines along our municipal right of ways you can bet we’d hear about it so I’m going to support this.”
It’s estimated Enbridge’s proposed charge would cost Belleville about $90,000 a year and it’s feared other utility companies would want to follow suit.
