Prince Edward County Council is reevaluating the rules around the use of Millennium Trail.
Millennium Trail is a 49km trail corridor connecting various parts of Prince Edward County, which was established in 2001.
Councillor Brad Nieman brought forward a motion to clarify the rules around the use of the trail. Councillor Phil St-Jean seconded the motion, noting that use of the trail now is very different than what was predicted when the trail was first established.
“Times have changed, the size of the vehicles has changed. There are other things that are being used on the trail that were not contemplated at that time. Here in Wellington it is popular to be riding on a golf cart on the trail, or on a Rascal or e-scooter,” said St-Jean
One of the concerns cited was that there were tour companies operating on the trail with large vehicles. Councillor Roy Pennell was against allowing commercial services to operate at all on the trail.
“I for one believe wholeheartedly that to commercialize the use of that spoils it not only for the present, but the future youth as they grow up in our community, and I think this council has the opportunity to eliminate commercial use of it,” said Pennell, referring to the trail property.
Council directed staff to investigate and prepare recommendations for new rules surrounding the trail’s use, and to look into a licence system for commercial services operating on the property.
