The City of Belleville’s Planning Committee has approved a recommendation to bring to city council a city-wide amendment that would implement Bill 23: More Homes Built Faster Act as it relates to accessory dwelling units.
The act now requires municipalities to permit a second accessory dwelling unit on any property containing a single-detached, semi-detached or freehold townhouse dwelling bringing the total number of units to three.
This means that there can now be a total of three units within a main building or two units in the main building with an additional unit in an accessory building.
Definitions of “second unit” and “coach house” would also be replaced with a new definition for “accessory dwelling unit.” There would also be a replacement of the general provisions for second units and coach houses with new general provisions for accessory dwelling units.
Municipalities are obligated to abide by provincial legislation.
City council will review the recommendation at a future council meeting.
