A more team-based method of medical care at Quinte Health hospitals is being credited for declines in patient volumes, the number of days people who should be in long-term care or receiving home care remain in hospital, and the number of days other admitted patients stay in hospital.
Patient volumes in January were down to 127% from 145% in the last half of 2022 and length of stay for admitted patients has decreased to 9.7 days, less than the peak of 12.4 days last August.
But teamwork isn’t the only reason. Quinte Health President and CEO Stacey Daub says adding acute care beds at Trenton Memorial has made a big difference.
“If you come to Trenton’s emergency department – in the past you might have had, because it was full, to go to Belleville. Now you don’t have to.
You can stay in Trenton if your care requirements allow you to stay here (Trenton).”
Medical teams include registered nurses, nurse practitioners, family doctors, and internal medicine specialists among other specialities collaborating together to treat patients in a more effective and timely manner.
