Quinte Judo club’s Sensei Gilbert Mooney competed at a tournament in Whitby on the weekend, hoping to get some matches with opponents in his age/weight category. Veterans’ divisions start at age 30, moving up in four-year intervals. Unfortunately, there were not any in his category for 60-64 year olds weighing 66 kilos.
Not wanting to go home with a first place finish just for just showing up, he took on an opponent half his age in the next higher weight division (73 kilos).
Mooney’s opponent was not able to do anything against him in the grappling aspect, which could have ended the match early. However, he got tossed a few times and still came home with a silver medal/points toward his next grading (fourth degree black belt). It used to be that you could just put your time in to qualify for a black belt grading, whereas now points must be earned through participation in various other aspects of Judo.
The Quinte Judo club meets twice/week at the Frank Masonic Centre in Frankford. More information about judo can be found on Facebook, by emailing quintejudoclub@sympatico.ca or calling 613-922-5192.
