The Belleville Police Service has been nominated for an award for its use of technology in its police cruisers by the organizers of the International IT Conference.
Three years ago Belleville police entered an agreement with a technology company called GEOTAB to provide real time data on not only how cruisers were operating mechanically but on how other systems were operating.
Police Chief Mike Callaghan says the technology is very useful.
“If we have an allegation from a member of the public that an officer was speeding or driving in a manner that wasn’t safe we’re immediately able to look back at the data from the vehicle to evaluate what that speed was, whether it had its red lights on.”
The technology even shows if officers are wearing seatbelts at any given time.
The police service has been nominated for the 2023 International Association of Chiefs of Police Award for Technology Innovation and Excellence.
