Prince Edward County will be debating whether to move forward on the purchase of the former Queen Elizabeth School at a council meeting on Thursday.
The County will look at recommendations to move forward on a conditional offer of $1 million for the former property located at 35 Barker Street in Picton.
The offer would be conditional on the County securing funding from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
The plan by the County would be to purchase the property and convert it to affordable housing.
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board declared the property as surplus to the needs of the board in November 2018.
The County initially was unsuccessful in purchasing the property from the school board in 2020 after the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board expressed interest in the property.
Ultimately, negotiations between all parties involved slowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the ALCDSB relinquishing its interest after completing arrangements with the Ministry of Education to build a new school at an alternate site in July 2022.
Prince Edward County then began the process of expression of interest for a second time of the Queen Elizabeth School site.
If council approves, the offer to purchase would last 180 days with a provision for a one-time further extension of 90 days.
