Heritage Belleville is marking Heritage Week, this week, by honouring a former chair.
The organization says Janna Munkittrick-Colton is being honoured for her outstanding contribution to Heritage in Belleville.
The third week in February has been designated as Ontario Heritage Week by the Ontario government.
During the week, Ontarians are invited to celebrate heritage, our diverse traditions and cultural expressions.
It is an opportunity to reflect and celebrate contributions made within the community to conserve, promote, and commemorate the past.
Heritage Belleville says that as a former chair and member for many years, Minkittrick-Colton has kept heritage at the forefront of the city’s strategic plan working cooperatively with property owners and educating residents on the importance of heritage.
Current Heritage Belleville Chair Karen Fisk states, “Janna has been a mentor to many in the Belleville community. She has deep family roots here and always stresses the importance of heritage as the heart of family and community.”
Since 2016 Heritage Belleville has been presenting Heritage Revitalization Awards to recognize the efforts of organizations and individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to restoring and revitalizing historic buildings, landmarks or culture in Belleville.
Previous recipients have included Paul Dinkel, Maury Flunder, Jamie Troke, St. Michael Catholic School, Bridge Street United Church, Sir James Whitney School, Studio 237, Signal Brewing Company and We Thrive.
Heritage Belleville, an advisory committee of the City of Belleville, uses this week to encourage awareness of heritage resources in the community.
The organzation says Heritage Week is also an excellent opportunity to initiate the new Heritage Belleville committee including Karen Fisk as chair, Patti Spice as vice-chair, Mark Stoliker as secretary, Curtis Hayes, Benjamin Johnstone, JP Lemieux and Nancy Roberts. Heritage Belleville will once again be facilitating Doors Open this fall.
