An arm wrestling tournament is coming to Picton in April.
The Picton Arm Wrestling Club is holding its first ever “Farm Wrestling” double elimination tournament on April 15 at Loha Farm.
Brad Hughes is a senior member of the club who helps with the organization and structure of the club.
“It will involve a youth tournament that’s 18 years and under. There will be specific weight classes involved for up to 100 pounds plus and then after the youth portion of the tournament is done, there will be an open class for male and female,” Hughes tells Quinte News. “Open means all experience and ages.”
Medals for the tournament will also be awarded for the top three in each weight class, best sportsmanship and best match.
Hughes explained how the best match medal is awarded.
“Match of the Day is just as it sounds,” Hughes explained. “Maybe an all out war between two competitors. Maybe a very technical match. One that has some length and time. Something that’s just fun to watch.”
While the Picton Arm Wrestling Club can be traced back to the 1990s when world champion arm wrestler Troy Eaton started the club, the club remained at a standstill into the 2000s.
The club came back to prominence however when an all-time great arm wrestler showed up to the club.
“In 2020, original club member Chris Armstrong started the club back up on his property there at LOHA Farms,” Hughes said.
“What really sparked it was Devon Larratt. He was an original member of the Picton Arm Wrestling Club. He came to Chris’ property for a practice to get ready for a world title match and he invited people to come practice with him at the property. From there it blew up and Chris saw the opportunity to get the club going again.”
The idea for the tournament came after the club held a similar tournament in partnership with the Picton Fair.
Hughes says that tournament drew about 200 entries and inspired the club to try a tournament on their own property.
“We figured early in the spring will be the best way to get the jump on the season and to get the tournament going,” Hughes said. “Hopefully we get a good draw for everyone to come to the tournament to start the season off.”
