The regional centre for advanced cancer, cardiac and other medical services is asking Belleville council for signicant financial support.
Representatives from the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation asked council for $1 million over five years to support short term equipment upgrades at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre.
The money would help pay for upgrades to operating rooms, clinical labs and a top of the line PET scan.
Councillor Garnet Thompson joined others in expressing support for the Kingston Health Sciences Centre.
“I think it’s an important link. We can never provide the services in Belleville that Kingston provides. We’ve got to remember that. If we want to provide those services our hospital budget would be humongous.”
Council will consider the request during budget deliberations.
Twenty-eight per cent of Belleville residents were treated last year at Kingston Health Sciences Centre last year.
Over the next 10 years it’s estimated the Health Sciences Centre will need to raise around $400 million to upgrade technology and replace technology.
The short-term goal is $15 million.
