The mayor of Quinte West and the Member of Parliament for Bay of Quinte riding have reached deep into their pockets to save the public from a sight better unseen.
At the recent annual Trenton Kiwanis Club Christmas Luncheon local realtor and well-known stand-up comic John Lewis finished his salty routine by threatening that if
$100,000 wasn’t raised for charity at the lunch he’d ride a bicycle wearing nothing but a thong through Trenton’s streets to City Hall.
The lunch came up short, raising $88,000. Enter Mayor Jim Harrison and MP Ryan Williams. Between them they threw in a total of $15,000 bringing the luncheon’s total to
close to $103,000.
“No one wants to see Louie (Lewis) riding damn near naked around here. We had to do something” laughed Williams.
“We’re happy to push the total up over $100,000. The money will help a lot of people over Christmas,” said Harrison.
The cheque presentation was held Thursday afternoon at Quinte West City Hall.
Former Kiwanis President Brad Little said in the 20 years since Lewis, who can trade quips with any headliner on the comedy circuit, has entertained at the luncheon over $1.8 million has
been raised. Until recently proceeds went to the Salvation Army but now most of the money goes to Crossroads Church and Catherine’s Kitchen for food hampers with the rest being donated to various charities.
