It is Christmas Eve and that means there are just a few days left in 2022.
As we move through the last few days of the year, we chatted with the Band Chief for the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, R. Don Maracle.
He says infrastructure was top of mind this year.
That included several water projects, the largest being in the area of Shannonville, for $30 million. Others were for $4.7 million, and there is another one they are looking at for $4.3 million over the next few months.
He says for the rest of the reserve, they have about 200 homes to still connect to water.
Another victory according to the Chief was the Culbertson Land Tract Claim, which returns 300 acres of farmland just northeast of Deseronto, along with around $30 million.
His main focus for 2023 is housing, housing, and more housing. Affordable housing on the reserve, like the rest of Hastings County and the province, are at a severe shortage with 125 families on the wait list.
