Quinte West will have more than one deputy mayor for its new term, there will be twelve.
At Thursday’s special council meeting, council approved a motion proposed by Councillor Shelley Stedall that the deputy mayor position be rotated between all members of council besides the mayor with the position changing hands every two months.
In contrast, Mayor Jim Harrison proposed to appoint one member of council to the position for one year, granting the position to four council members over the course of the four-year term.
Councillor Stedall said she wanted to provide more opportunities to other council members to perform those duties.
“I wanted to open up the opportunity for all members of council so that they could be able to do meet and greets that happen with the mayor,” said Stedall. “I want them to at least know what the duties, the functions are, and to be able to be present, as one of the leads of the council.”
After intense debate, the council voted on and passed the resolution.
