Belleville’s Fire and Emergency Services Chief didn’t quite make it in a crowded field Monday night but just being nominated for a Premier’s Award for outstanding Ontario College graduates has been a source of pride not only for herself but the entire community.
Chief Monique Belair, a graduate of Niagara College, was one of 21 graduates nominated for a 2022 Premier’s Award in the category of Community Services.
Belair is a trail-blazing firefighter encouraging girls and women to consider firefighting as a career and began Camp Molly to introduce them to the job.
In a tweet after the ceremony Belair thanked everyone who supported her vision of a modern fire service.
The winner in the category was entrepreneur and gun violence survivor Shereen Ashman of Centennial College.
Outdoor Lifestyle expert and member of Quinte Broadcasting Carson Arthur, who attended Humber College, was also a nominee in the category of Creative Arts and Design.
The winner of that category was CBC reporter and Niagara College alum Murray Brewster.
