Bancroft OPP is reminding residents and visitors in the Bancroft area that hunting season is underway.
Hunting season for most small game (including grouse/partridge and hare) and most geese has already begun in the region, with duck season having begun on Saturday September 24. Rifle hunting for deer hunting including the use of dogs begins November 7 and runs until November 20.
Residents may see and hear people participating in this outdoor activity. Other lawful activities such as target and skeet shooting may also be taking place at any time in the year. These involve the discharge of firearms; residents should not be alarmed as long as this is done in a safe manner.
For those who want to enjoy a fall walk in the woods or along trails on public land in rural areas, police advise taking precautions. If frequenting areas where these activities are occurring, please make yourself more visible by wearing a bright “Hunter Orange” jacket and/or hat or another bright colour. If you take your dog with you, consider putting something brightly-coloured on them or attach a bell to their collar.
If you come across a dog that appears to be a hunting dog and it’s not in distress the dog maybe making its way back to its owner. If you have concerns for the dog, you can contact the number on the collar if it can be located safely or you can contact the local dog pound.
Police say it’s important everyone remains safe when participating in their respective activity.
