The Quinte Labour Council officially endorsed Mitch Panciuk in the 2022 Belleville mayoral race.
The endorsement was made official at an event at Panciuk’s campaign office on Thursday.
QLC President Marg Bourgoin was in attendance for the announcement.
She touted Panciuk for not laying off municipal workers during the pandemic as one of the reasons for the endorsement.
“It certainly goes a very long way with labor and all their members that he did not have to lay off anybody during the pandemic,” Bourgoin told media members.
“Everybody worked. That is a huge stress reliever for a lot of people. So that went a long way in our decision as well as his record the past four years and the fact that we have communicated a lot during that time period, which is really awesome.”
It’s the second straight campaign the Quinte Labour Council endorsed Panciuk for mayor.
Panciuk says he is happy to have council’s endorsement again.
“I was fortunate to have their support four years ago and the fact that I still have their support is really something that I’m really honoured by,” Panciuk said.
There was no endorsement in the Quinte West mayoral race.
“The committee that sat down together to review the questionnaires, and then brought forward the endorsements, recommended that the committee did not have any recommendations for endorsement in Quinte West,” Bourgoin explained.
The municipal election in Belleville is Oct. 24.
