“If a person with an older dog suddenly found themselves in a position where they required a specially trained dog they shouldn’t have to ask for permission, they should just be able to go ahead and get one.”
“People with accessibility needs, they already have to work hard to, to live in a world which is not built properly for them. And why add an additional barrier?”
“So that was the opportunity that came up because there was just one exception in the community and we found a way to remove, you know, just another possible barrier, and help with this one exception at the same time,” said Councillor MacNaughton
The by-law notes that the municipality is committed to fostering an inclusive community.
It also indicates that service animals help people with disabilities or conditions such as Visual Impairments, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Autism, and physical disabilities live independently with dignity.
