The Quinte West YMCA bears a new name.
In honour of former Mayor John Williams, who led the project to construct the YMCA during his time in office, the Quinte West YMCA was officially dubbed the John Williams YMCA at a ceremony on Wednesday.
Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison and many members of council attended the event, along with John Williams’ wife Heather and son, Bay of Quinte MP Ryan Williams.
“Really it was the work from all that council and himself leading that, that resulted in this great YMCA here in Quinte West that does so much for so many,” said Ryan Williams.
Williams’ family said they believed John would have been honoured, with Ryan adding that John would have wanted to also recognize the members of council he worked with to get the project completed.
John Williams was a councillor for Sidney ward from 2000 to 2003 and mayor of Quinte West from 2006 to 2014.
Williams’ contributions didn’t stop at the YMCA. He also had a long list of volunteer work, built connections with CFB Trenton, led the projects to build the Trent Port Marina, and the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial.
Williams passed away in Feburary of 2020, at the age of 66.
