Bicycle Thefts
The Belleville Police Service would like to advise the public of steps to take in deterring bike thefts and, in the unfortunate event that your bike is stolen, information that would help police in locating your bicycle, returning it to you and assisting with investigations to find those responsible.
The Belleville Police advise you to do the following:
-
Take several photos from various angles of the bicycle
-
Keep the original sales receipt
-
Write down a detailed description, including:
- Serial Number (serial number will almost always be printed – or embossed on the underside of your frame’s bottom bracket)
-
Make/model
-
Size/colour
-
Date/place of purchase
-
Value
-
Any distinctive features
If your bicycle is stolen, this information is crucial to police in locating and returning found/stolen bikes to their rightful owners.
To prevent bicycle thefts, use a quality lock (a hardened steel U-lock or steel chain and padlock). U-locks provide a greater deterrence to theft when compared with cable locks and also consider using two different types of locks (ex. U-lock for the front wheel and frame and a heavy-duty cable lock for the rear wheel and frame), as thieves are less likely to carry two kinds of tools to break both locks.
