A number of Ontario municipalities have supported a move by Hastings County to expand the Amber Alert system.
Centre Hastings Mayor Tom Deline told county council on Thursday he was disappointed that St. Catherines failed to support the recommendation, while another 15 municipalities supported it.
In June, county council passed a resolution calling on the province to develop a warning program similar to Amber Alert, but for people with special needs who leave caregivers or locations and potentially put themselves at risk.
The motion pointed out “…we have all become aware of the recent tragic death of Draven Graham, an 11 year-old child on the autistic spectrum, after walking away from the family home.”
It also states that the Amber Alert has been very effective in announcing to the public children who have been abducted.
