A Quinte West resident has lost about $3,000 after falling victim to a scam.
Quinte West OPP say the victim lost the money in what is commonly known as a “prize scam.”
The complainant initially received a phone call from a person claiming to represent a lottery telling them that they won over two million dollars.
The suspect then allegedly requested a sum of money to release the prize winnings to the victim.
The incident was reported to police on Friday.
The investigation is ongoing.
In 2021, 580 cases of prize scams were reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) with a total loss of $2.5 million.
It is estimated that fewer than five percent of frauds are actually reported.
