More funding has become available to help businesses and non-profit organizations become more accessible.
The Small Business Centre in Belleville is ready to assist small businesses in applying for up to a $10,000 grant to become more accessible.
There are three streams of funding – Workplace Accessibility, Community Accessibility and Information and Communications Technology projects.
Grant dollars can be used for renovations, construction, retrofit activities, the purchase of accessible equipment/devices and the provision of information and communication technologies (ICT) and systems. Examples are automated door openers, l FM hearing loop systems, accessible kayaks or canoes, accessible pathways and raised garden beds, adaptive software and virtual reality goggles.
Applications can be obtained from the Small Business Centre who is representing the Bay of Quinte region’s applicants to access this funding. “I have participated as the Youth Accessibility Leader for three years, which is a voluntary position, and we want to continue to create more accessible spaces and to promote inclusivity,” said Brianna Rossit, Youth Accessibility Leader.
The role of the SBC is to provide the application, provide reasoning for the funds and to assist business owners in completing the application.
“As a result of these projects, people with disabilities will have more opportunities to participate in community activities, programs and services, or access employment opportunities. Assisting with applications on this grant program has seen our area receive more funding per capita than any other area,” said Amber Darling, Executive Director of Trenval who is the Managing Partner of the Small Business Centre.
“Even a business such as you know doing the bicycle businesses. Doing a tandem bike where a seeing person rides the bike and, you know, a vision impaired person would be the passenger on that tandem bike.”
The program is open to not-for-profit organizations (including social enterprises), for profit businesses (maximum 99 fulltime equivalent employees), municipal government and Indigenous organizations and is funded by Employment and Social Development Canada. Deadline for applications is October 31 at 5 p.m.
