It’s official.
Belleville city council has replaced its old taxi by-law with a vehicle for hire by-law, setting licensing fees and safety standards that include not only taxicabs, but limousines, and ride-hailing services such as Uride.
Under the new by-law the city will not control how many people can be licensed for public transportation in the city which should mean more choice, price competition, and better service for consumers.
Councillor Chris Malette said the by-law was long overdue as people had been complaining about slow or non-existent taxi service in the city for the past few years.
