The Canadian economy lost 43,000 jobs in June, marking the first decline in employment since January.
At the same time, the unemployment rate fell to another record low of 4.9 per cent in June, according to Statistics Canada’s monthly labour force survey.
The agency says the decline in unemployment is attributed to fewer people looking for work.
The unemployment rate across the Belleville Census Metropolitan area fell again, dropping from 2.9% in May to two per cent last month.
The Belleville CMA includes Belleville, Quinte West, Tyendinaga/Deseronto, and Stirling-Rawdon.
The rate is a major decrease from June 2021 when the local unemployment rate was 8.4%.
The provincial rate fell four-tenths of a point to 5.1%.
