As the national unemployment rate hit a record low, the local rate also fell.
Statistics Canada reports May’s unemployment rate in the Belleville Census Metropolitan Area dropped two tenths from April’s 3.1% t 2.9%.
The Belleville CMA includes Belleville, Quinte West, Tyendinaga/Deseronto, and Stirling-Rawdon.
The local rate is down more than eight per cent from a year ago. In May of 2021, during COVID-19 lockdowns, unemployment was 11%.
The national rate fell to 5.1%, the lowest rate since at least 1976 which is as far back as comparable data goes.
The provincial rate actually rose slightly to 5.5% from 5.4.
