The provincial government’s long-time water cleanup of the Deloro Mine site in Centre Hastings continues in 2022.
Deloro Manager with the Ministry of Environment, Katharine Faaren, tells Quinte News the remediation work is 75% complete.
Faaren says it will be an ongoing operation.
“As a matter of fact, because it takes such a long time for ground water to flow through the site we expect that treatment to continue in the order of 30 to 40 years.”
“Even once the Young’s Creek remediation is complete we’re still going to be operating the ground water pump and treat systems and treatment facilities for the indefinite future.”
She indicated that could be for at least another 40 to 50 years.
Deloro was one of Ontario’s first gold mines, and the first producer of arsenic in North America.
