May 1 to 7 is Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada. During this week, Belleville Fire & Emergency Services is encouraging residents to take steps to ensure they are prepared in the event of an emergency.
There are three main steps we can all take to be prepared:
-
Be Informed – Learn about the hazards that are in your community. Knowing what hazards are in your community can give you a better understanding of what type of emergencies could happen and when they might occur. This can help you make more informed decisions and create a better household emergency plan.
-
Make a Plan – Creating an emergency plan can help you to think about what to do in different situations. Emergencies can happen at any time and you and your family may not be together when an emergency happens, or you may need to evacuate your home. Thinking about what you would do in these situations and discussing them with every member of your family is a good step in being prepared for any emergency.
-
Build an Emergency Kit – An emergency kit should contain all the supplies that you and your family will need to stay safe and take care of yourselves for 72 hours immediately following an emergency.
Belleville Fire & Emergency Services and the City of Belleville will be sharing emergency preparedness tips through social media throughout the week. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to Belleville Emergency Management on Twitter and the City’s YouTube channel.
