A Municipal Accommodations Tax (MAT) could be coming to the Municipality of Brighton.
Brighton council will discuss adding the tax to the price of overnight stays at motels and short term
accommodation businesses at its meeting tonight.
Staff is recommending a MAT of 5%. They estimate such a tax could bring in close to $300,000 in revenue to the municipality which must be split with another “tourism-related entity” such as the Bay of Quinte Regional Marketing Board.
Belleville, Quinte West, and Prince Edward County all have 4% accommodations taxes in place and share the revenues with the marketing board.
