A Canadian soldier from the Colborne-area has died in the Afghan mission. The military says the body of 30-year-old Major Michelle Mendes of Wicklow was found in her room yesterday at the Kandahar air field. The military says enemy action has been ruled out in the death of Mendes, who was based in Ottawa. Mendes was injured in a previous operation back in 2006. Her death raises to 118 the number of Canadian soldiers who’ve died in the Afghan mission, which began in 2002. That number includes three women.
