With Canadians like Bianca Andreescu, Milos Raonic, and Denis Shapovalov doing well on the pro circuit, the sport of tennis is growing at a pace of 35% a year nationally.
And Monday the Vice-President of the Quinte Tennis Club Peter Coy asked city council to consider building a world-class multi-court covered tennis facility.
Coy said Tennis Canada considers Belleville a prime location for a big new year-round facility and that if properly run the centre could be run at a profit and benefit the region economically. Coy said the courts could also be used for pickleball.
Belleville currently has very few tennis courts but several outdoor ones are to be built in the near future.
Mayor Panciuk said council was interested in the idea but suggested the local tennis club approach service clubs, businesses and senior government for financial support first to get the project moving.
