The Community Development Council of Quinte (CDC) is doing good work.
The non-profit agency delivered 55,000 Good Food Bags containing fresh fruit and vegetables to almost 17,000 people in various locations in Hastings and Prince Edward counties.
About 15% of the two counties’ population regularly have challenges being able to access or afford a healthy diet.
A Good Food Bag contains fruit and vegetables worth about $25 at the store but are sold to people by the Community Development Council for just $10.
Executive Director of Community Development Council Quinte Ruth Ingersoll.
“Our goal is to get that food out to a lot of those food deserts where people don’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables and some not even to any food.”
Unfortunately these are challenging financial times for CDC as a half milion dollar Trillium grant that paid for the Good Food programs is expiring next month. Ingersoll says that if grants applied for come through and with support from the United Way and other agencies the CDC should be able to keep running the programs for the next two years, however that’s not for certain.
Donations to the Community Development Council are always welcome.
