The Belleville Senators couldn’t have picked a better time to match their longest winning streak of the AHL season. And forward Matt Wedman couldn’t pick a better time to end a 19 game goal-scoring drought.
Wedman scored twice to help Belleville to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Laval Rocket to extend their winning streak to four games. Wedman enjoys playing against Laval. He has scored 6 of his 11 goals this season against the Rocket.
While Wedman’s offence was welcome and needed, the key to the game was goaltender Mads Sogaard as the B-Sens were outshot 46-24 including 23-7 in the third period. Coach Troy Mann spoke about his goaltender.
Sogaard returned to Belleville last weekend after recently making his NHL debut with the Ottawa Senators.
Defenceman Zac Leslie scored what proved to be the game winner in the second period. Andrew Agozzino added an empty netter for good measure.
While Belleville remains in fourth place in the tight North Division they are just two points behind second place Laval with Syracuse squashed in between. (See standings below.)
Three of Belleville’s final four games in the regular season will be played against their Ontario rivals, the Toronto Marlies. They will be at the CAA Arena tomorrow (Wednesday) night at 7:05.
