The Affordable Housing Corporation in Prince Edward County is going to be leveraging the support and expertise of the municipality, while maintaining its independence.
Councillors voted in favour of adopting a hybrid governance model for the Housing Corporation during their regular council meeting on Tuesday night.
CAO Marcia Wallace explained that this hybrid model does two things; it allows the corporation to maintain an independent board while the day-to-day operations and project implementation work would be done by municipal staff.
Councillor Ernie Margetson, who is a board member of the Affordable Housing Corporation, noted the executive director of the Corporation is on board with this change.
The board would be able to fundraise, set strategic direction and develop housing projects while having the municipality run day-to-day operations allowing for more work to be done while saving time and money.
Councillor Andreas Bolik felt the planning and engineering departments are already challenged and it is not ideal to add to their work load. He felt the corporation got off on the wrong foot, and it’s going to remain a mess for a while.
Councillor Janice Maynard disagreed and stated all they really want to see is affordable housing and feels this is the best way to get it in the shortest time possible.
The Affordable Housing Corporation was established as an arms-length organization in December 2018 to find ways to increase the supply of affordable housing in the County.
