Work continues on a major affordable housing project in the City of Belleville.
Monday, Habitat for Humanity Prince Edward-Hastings Executive Director Hazzem Koudsi told city council that funding to support a 66-unit building on the site of the former Belleville Police headquarters on Dundas East is now being applied for.
The funding would come through the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation in the form of interest-free loans and/or non-repayable grants.
A rough estimate for the cost of the Habitat Horizons Centre is $26 million.
After funding is approved, design would begin and it’s hoped construction would start in the fall 2023.
The units, of various sizes but mostly two-bedroom, would be for purchase.
Koudsi told council the one-family, one-house concept Habitat for Humanity is known for just can’t produce enough housing when the demand for affordable housing is rising exponentially.
